The driver badly injured in a crash yesterday on Highway 144 is a Garson man, police have revealed.

The 63-year-old was the lone occupant of a northbound pickup, which went “off the roadway onto the shoulder and struck a very large rock along the edge of the road,” according to preliminary investigation by the OPP.

The incident occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. at Crab Lake, south of Cartier, the OPP said in a release.

Nipissing West (Sudbury) OPP responded to the scene along with Sudbury EMS, the Cartier Fire Department and Ornge Air Ambulance, which flew the driver to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

An OPP reconstructionist also attended the scene to assist in the investigation.

The northbound lane of 144 was closed for approximately three hours while officers conducted their investigation.

The investigation is continuing.
